Michael Tippett’s Byzantium
Georg Solti, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Faye Robinson (soprano)
Michael Tippett at his plinkiest-plonkiest 1990s style: it is not my favourite style of his! Interestingly, the world premier of this work was given by Solti in April 1991, with Faye Robinson stepping in at short notice to sing the soprano part originally intended for Jessye Norman, who pulled out of the premier with only a couple of weeks’ notice. So this is about as definitive a version of the performance as you’re likely to get on record, I guess. It’s listenable, but I don’t love it.
