Ralph Vaughan Williams’ An Oxford Elegy
David Willcocks, Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, John Westbrook (speaker), Jacques Orchestra
Music in the finest of Vaughan Williams’ ‘cow pat’ pastoral tradition! It’s a bit of an odd work: music is lovely, choir oohing and ahhing sublimely… and then a narrator who won’t shut up reciting some tedious poetry by Matthew Arnold. (Sorry: was never a fan of Arnold’s stuff!) I should also note that the narrator on this recording (John Westbrook) sounds extraordinarily like Christopher Lee!
