Wilhelm Stenhammar’s Symphony No. 2
Paavo Järvi, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra
Very attractive music from Wilhelm Stenhammar, who was Swedish and had dates 1871 – 1927. The earlier of those dates is interesting, because it makes him a Swedish near-contemporary of Vaughan Williams -and, to my ears, he sounds a little like RVW (or perhaps folk-song Holst) on a good day. I suppose if I were trying to find a more mainstream European who he sounds like, it might be early Sibelius. Either way, he’s worth listening to!
