Paul Dessau’s Meer der Stürme [Orchestermusik No. 2]
Herbert Kegel, Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester Leipzig
I don’t think even the most charitable would describe this as ‘attractive’ music: it’s quite atonal, dissonant, serial music. But it’s interesting to listen to. My introduction to Dessau as a composer was thanks to a David Hurwitz video, and that video was more about an adaptation of some Mozart that Dessau had made -so definitely not astringent, atonal or unpleasant! But it was a good way to ‘get into’ the whole range of Dessau’s music, and all of it has been interesting (and, to various degrees, challenging!) so it was definitely a good ‘tip’.
