Pavel Haas’ Vier Lieder
Ed Spanjaard, Nieuw Ensemble, Maarten Koningsberger (baritone)
A sad, but very interesting CD. Sad, because it contains the music of three composers who were all deported to the Theresienstadt internment camp, prior to their dispatch, severally, to places like Auschwitz where, of course, they were murdered. The works all date from their time in Theresienstadt, where cultural pursuits were encouraged for the likes of the Red Cross to see and approve. Interesting, because the music is not the sort of thing I would have expected the Nazis to allow to be written: often dodecaphonic, always ‘spiky’. One might have expected it to have been dismissed -and forbidden- as ‘degenerate art’.
