Hans Florian Zimmer was born in 1957 in Frankfurt, West Germany (the middle name is seldom used anywhere I've looked, so it's not used in these pages!) He went to school in Switzerland, moved to London as a teenager and eventually moved on to the United States.
His primary claim to compositional fame is as a writer of film scores. His first was in 1988, for Rain Man: it was a pretty good beginning, as he was nominated for the Oscar for it in 1989.
Other notable film scores were Thelma & Louise, True Romance, The Lion King, Gladiator, The Da Vinci Code, Sherlock Holmes and many others. He has won the Oscar for Best Original Score twice: for The Lion King in 1995 and Dune in 2022. In total, twelve of his film scores have been nominated for Oscars, which is pretty phenomenal.
His music is characterised by its tendency to blend all sorts of various musical genres, such as classical, electronic, and rock. His instrumentation palette is varied, too, with extensive and imaginitive use of synthesizers, percussion, and strings. He uses recurrent melodic motifs (almost leitmotiv) to encourage a sense of familiarity and recognition in his audience, whilst maintaining an intensity and emotional depth throughout.
