He was born Polish, but became French. The New Grove therefore supplies the alternative spelling ‘Aleksander’ in brackets, indicating it is the inferior choice and that ‘Alexandre’ is the preferred one. Last.fm have at least eight variations on his name! This is the correct one, however.
