Daniel-François-Esprit Auber

I'm afraid the hodge-podge of hyphenated first names is required: New Groves doesn't simplify him to plain 'Daniel Auber', even if Wikipedia does so! He was born in 1782 (in Caen, Normandy) and died in 1871 (in Paris).

He is primarily known as the composer of 50+ operas (sources differ on the specific number), though in his role of director of the Imperial Chapel at the Louvre from 1852 until 1870, he also wrote a substantial body of liturgical and other sacred music. Amongst his operas, over 30 were of the opéra comique variety. Of these, probably Fra Diavolo is the most well-known.

Incidentally, it's a curious thought that the man you see photographed at the left (somewhere around the 1860s) was born in the eighteenth century, almost a full decade before Mozart was dead!
