Ruth Gipps

Born in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex in 1921 and died in Framfield (also in East Sussex) in 1999, Ruth Gipps is not a particularly well-known composer, though she studied composition with Gordon Jacob and Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music from 1937 on. She was an accomplished oboist (studying with Léon Goossens) and pianist, whilst simultaneously being able to compose a huge amount of music, only a little of which has been recorded. Her music output consists of, amongst other things, five symphonies, half a dozen concertos (including two for the violin), string quartets and other chamber music, plus a smattering of choral works.
