Opera Synopses: La Sonnambula (Vincenzo Bellini)

  • Elvino is betrothed to Amina. Rodolfo returns after a long time away and is put up for the night at the village inn.
  • Amina sleepwalks into Rodolfo's room, but Rodolfo (eventually!) refuses to take advantage of her.
  • Elvino thinks Amina has been bonking Rodolfo at the inn, however, and breaks off the engagement.
  • Rodolfo tries to persuade everyone of Amina's innocence, and eventually points out that she sleepwalks.
  • Amina, now in deep sleep, walks across a dangerous bridge (and survives) as the entire village looks on.
  • Cue general rejoicing as Elvino now believes in Amina's innocence and agrees to marry her once more.

Premiered 1831, Milan.

Duration: Around 2.25 hours, in two Acts.
