- Elvino is betrothed to Amina. Rodolfo returns after a long time away and is put up for the night at the village inn.
- Amina sleepwalks into Rodolfo's room, but Rodolfo (eventually!) refuses to take advantage of her.
- Elvino thinks Amina has been bonking Rodolfo at the inn, however, and breaks off the engagement.
- Rodolfo tries to persuade everyone of Amina's innocence, and eventually points out that she sleepwalks.
- Amina, now in deep sleep, walks across a dangerous bridge (and survives) as the entire village looks on.
- Cue general rejoicing as Elvino now believes in Amina's innocence and agrees to marry her once more.
