Gustav Mahler

I'm not sure if it's as widely recognised as it should be: but Mahler (born in 1860) was only 50 when he died -and, what's more, his first symphony was only finally completed in around 1896 (though versions of it date back to 1887). So we all know he wrote 10 enormous symphonies (Das Lied von der Erde is a symphony!) and sketches for an eleventh. My point is: he did all of that in the space of about 15 years, give or take. I only myself realised the enormity of that achievement quite recently: you get into a mental habit of thinking 'old men, long lives, large body of work'. Well, not in Mahler's case, really: almost everything he composed was packed into the last 15 years of his life (when, remember, he was busy being the director of the Vienna opera house).
