Distro Updates, Giocoso and Other Stuff...

The thumbnail at the left is a screenshot of me testing Giocoso Version 3.30 on the still-in-Beta Fedora 42 (due for release in a couple of weeks): there were no surprises and, as you can see for yourself, everything works as expected.

The same thing happened on the still-in-Beta version of the next Ubuntu, I'm pleased to say, so this years crop of fresh distro updates do not appear to be posing a significant problem for existing versions of Giocoso, Semplice or Niente as far as I could tell:

I had slightly more trouble with running things on OpenSUSE Leap 16, which is only just in Alpha state and isn't due for release until late this year:

I mean, it works... but the software prerequisites part of the installation failed and had to be patched up manually. We'll see if this is a big issue the closer Leap 16 gets to release.

Entirely separately, I have encountered a small bug with Giocoso Version 3.30 running on my main music PC: there's a call to the 'ps' utility at one point which, for reasons I can't quite fathom, triggers a syntax error message which scrambles the main program display as music is playing. I made some code tweaks and haven't seen the problem recur, so I'm releasing that as Version 3.31 on the 10th  of April.

At the same time, I'll be releasing Version 4.03 of Niente: the new version contains a bunch of small bug fixes and one or two significant user interface enhancements, all detailed in the Changelog, and many as a result of input from regular contributor Scott.

The website continues to function well on its new virtualised infrastructure. I did happen to notice that my catalogue of Mozart's works had become 'altered' to the extent that you couldn't see the composition incipits (or hear them). You were supposed to be able to see/hear this sort of thing:

...but the music score and audio excerpt bit had all been replaced by mysterious numbers, which was a bit of a blow for a catalogue of over 620 items! Fortunately, some database magic made it all bounce back into usable form once more, as shown above. I've checked all the other database-sourced material on the site (e.g., Bach's cantata translations) and I can't see any particular issues, so I think this was a one-off, and all hopefully fixed in perpetuity!

I'm still not entirely recovered from my recent bout of illness, so I'll be laying off the software business for a while after April 10th: time to take a step back and listen to music, perhaps, from a mostly recumbant position!
